Utopia and the Schorren
Utopia nature reserve is part of the so-called ‘Bird Boulevard’ on Texel. Developed in 2009/2010, this reserve from Natuurmonumenten consists of shallow pools and low-lying islands. This provides the perfect habitat for species such as Avocet, Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Redshank and Black-tailed Godwit. However, the area is famous for its Sandwich Tern colony, which numbers around 4,000 pairs.
During the breeding season, volunteers from Natuurmonumenten are on-site to provide information about the birds of Utopia, the coastal marsh of the Schorren and the surrounding intertidal areas. A large colony of Spoonbills breed on the Schorren, and many come to Utopia to forage, giving ample photo opportunities.
During the Wadden Islands Bird Festival there will be additional volunteers to tell you about the area and its birds.
