Bird Excursions

Throughout the Wadden Islands Bird Festival, the Bird Information Centre will be organising special birdwatching excursions. The money raised through these excursions will be donated to the charity ‘Texel Bird Island’ and go towards helping birds on Texel. This way we can do something we enjoy and also give something back. During the Wadden Islands Bird Festival you can choose from both walking and minibus excursions.

Excursions in our dedicated minibus last around 3 hours and are for a maximum of 8 people. Morning excursions depart from the Bird Information Centre and take you along the ‘Bird Boulevard’ on the east side of Texel. Our goal is to see as many different bird species as possible with an emphasis on waders, gulls and terns.

Afternoon excursions depart from the Bird Information Centre and take you to Dunes of Texel National Park. You will visit areas such as the ‘Slufter’ tidal inlet, dune valleys, pine woodlands, marshlands and the ‘Mokbaai’ tidal bay. Here too our goal is to find as many bird species as possible within the National Park. During this excursion you will see more songbirds and dune species.

After the excursions you will return to the Bird Information Centre and together with your guide you can complete your species list while enjoying a cup of tea or coffee. Walking excursions depart and various times during the day and last for around 2 hours. We sometimes use a couple of cars to travel to a nearby area to start the walk. The purpose of these walking excursions is to find as many bird species as possible but attention is also attention given to identifying birds as well as bird songs and calls. At the end of the walk you will return to the Bird Information Centre and together with your guide you can complete your species list while enjoying a cup of tea or coffee. All proceeds from these birdwatching excursions will be donated to help birds on Texel. The charity ‘Texel Bird Island’ strives to encourage birdwatching on Texel and also aims to create sites for watching birds without causing them disturbance.
